State of HTTPS Certificates 2017

Technical capability: INTERMEDIATE

Description:
This talk is a brief history of precisely what the green padlock in your browser means, the explosive growth of both CAs, intermediates and certificates issued, what new technologies and standards browsers are adopting (such as HSTS, HPKP, OCSP, Certificate Transparency) and what they mean to those responsible for websites, and what implications these have for those that MITM TLS connections, and why iPhone users should be worried about the Hongkong Post Office.

Speaker: Adam Eijdenberg

What are certificates?
Certificates are involved in the process of authentication, verification and data encryption over the internet. Certificates contain information about the authenticity of certain details regarding the identity of a person, business or website, which it will display to visitors on your website when they click on the browser’s padlock symbol or trust mark. A certificate also enables encryption, which means that the sensitive information exchanged via the website cannot be intercepted and read by anyone other than the intended recipient.
