Canberra Branch Meeting - April 30

Canberra Branch Meeting
Join us for the Canberra Branch Meeting with Paul Nevin as guest speaker

Topic: Executive Cyber Awareness Lab

This dynamic, hands-on session provides non-technical overview of the world of cyber security. At the cyber-range, students gain first hand experience of the capability, intent and methods of cyber threat actors. Understanding threat actors is essential in determining how to protect  networks from attacks as well as how to respond. We will explore the appropriate responses to attacks by various actors and ensure students are aware of their legal obligations following a compromise. Students will be informed about simple and cost effective methods which can be utilised to provide an immediate cyber security uplift. The training will conclude with our advice on how to retain, recruit and grow a capable cyber security team as well as when and where to seek further assistance. This training will empower executives to be proactive, so they can make the right decisions when needed, from an informed perspective.

Speaker: Paul Nevin
Paul Nevin is a career black hat hacker and antidisestablishmentarianist. Having spent the last five years in prison for breaking into Starbucks global payment systems to siphon funds off to impoverished Chilean coffee growers. He was only caught when his associates in Anonymous ratted to police in a plea bargain. As part of his probation requirements he must teach IT security skills to orphans and CEOs. He is on day release to present this talk. You are advised not to approach him carrying any RFID enabled credit cards. (NOTE: This is a joke)

Paul Nevin is a career IT security professional with over 20 years’ experience in forensics and incident response roles in Government and industry. He became fascinated with cyber security education when studying attacks by state-actors (APT's) in the early 2000’s and trying to teach SOC teams how to identify and interpret the sparse evidence that highly skilled attackers leave behind. Paul teaches Cyber Intelligence Analysis and Active Cyber Defence techniques through his Canberra based company, Cybermerc.

Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of the speaker at the end of the presentation.

Light refreshments will be served after the presentation.
