Melbourne Branch Meeting - February 12

Join us at the AISA Melbourne Branch for the first meeting of 2020! Presenters Laura & Henri from Sladen Legal will discuss how blockchain is changing the legal landscape of everyday business

Topic: Disruptive Ledger Technology: How Blockchain is changing the legal landscape of everyday business

Technology is constantly changing the way that we view, modify and participate in everyday business. Distributed Ledger Technology, including the prolific ‘Blockchain’, as well as cryptocurrency and smart contracts, are poised to have a radical impact on everyday business.

A distributed ledger is a database that exists across several locations and is decentralized to eliminate the need for a central authority to process, validate or authenticate transactions. Distributed ledgers such as blockchain are exceedingly useful for financial transactions. They cut down on operational inefficiencies which ultimately saves money. Greater security is also provided due to their decentralized nature, as well as the fact that the ledgers are immutable.

This presentation will attempt to explain the importance in understanding how these new and emerging technologies operate, how they may influence business structuring and operations, as well as succession and tax planning, in order to generate more value for organisations.

Speakers: Laura Spencer & Henri Sheridan, Business Law Team - Sladen Legal

Laura is a Senior Associate with a wealth of experience in commercial and tax law matters, having worked with a vast array of clients across Australia and the United Kingdom. Laura’s predominant focus areas include federal and state taxation, trust law advice and structuring, asset protection and wealth management, and the legal and tax implications for cryptocurrency transactions.

Henri is a Graduate Lawyer with a keen interest in emerging and future regulatory and financial technologies, and has authored several papers on the interaction between blockchain and the law (and finance industry), including a thesis on how blockchain may be used as a tool for anti-money laundering compliance in light of Australia’s privacy framework.

Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of the speakers at the end of the presentation.

Light refreshments will be served after the presentation.
