Keynote Presentation: How individuals shape our industry, and how our industry shapes us
We all know it's essential to have a healthy mindset in any role, and it is even more so when in a high-stress industry like cyber security. We will explore how mindset can affect one's resilience; what part our industry plays; and finding inspiration from others.
According to an article published by Forbes on 15 February 2019, a new global study of cybersecurity professionals has revealed the true extent to which the stresses and pressures facing the average CISO impact upon both professional and personal life. It reported that one in six CISOs now medicate or use alcohol. What can we do to reverse this trend?

Speaker: Manal (Mia) al-Sharif
Mia is best known as the first Saudi woman to specialize in information security. A computer scientist by education, InfoSec expert by profession and activist by accident. Mia’s 16 years of dedication to the information security field began with achieving her Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in 2002 with a First (Honor and Excellence Award). That same year, Mia joined the newly established Information Security department in the largest multinational oil producing company in the world, Saudi Aramco, making her a founding member at a time when cybersecurity was in its infancy and overlooked.
Mia believes that a career should be purpose driven. Mia is passionate about using technology for social impact and believes that the cybersecurity field struggles today because only one in ten are women. A TED, WIRED, Harvard and UN speaker and author of “Daring to Drive: A Saudi Woman's Awakening”. Mia writes about women’s empowerment and social justice for the NY Times, Washington Post, the Time and other international publications.
This presentation will be followed by a Panel Discussion on Shining Stars which will be moderated by Manal (Mia) al-Sharif

Jacqui Kernot
Jacqui is an experienced cyber security professional with more than two decades' experience across various verticals including Defence, Space, Intelligence, Telecommunications, Financial Services and Government, both here and in the UK and Europe.
Jacqui is a strong leader and speaker who is passionate about and committed to change in our industry and the workplace, to make work a better human experience. Jacqui is the Chair of Females in IT and Telecommunications, the longest running and largest organisation for women in tech in Australia.
Matthew Parkhill
Matthew spent nine years in the Australian Army. Two thirds of that time were working within Special Operations Command as a Special Operations Engineer. He has seen deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq in both an operations and mentoring capacity. Matthew is currently employed as a Security Analyst within Macquarie Governments Security Operations Centre.
Alison Turner
Alison is an experienced and qualified psychotherapist who spent 18 years in Silicon Valley including five years working in human resources with a NASDAQ listed technology company and Kaiser Permanente hospital in Santa Clara before moving into a career in Psychology.
Alison’s work in Silicon Valley and now in Sydney, specialises in working with individuals and couples and has experience helping individuals cope with traumatic experiences.
Alison studied in the US, receiving an undergraduate degree in Psychology with Honours from Rowan University in New Jersey and went on to complete a Masters Degree in counselling psychology from Santa Clara University in California, also graduating with Honours.
Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of the speakers at the end of the presentation.
